Teachers as Facebook Freinds?

What is the etiquette regarding Facebook friendships? It’s always changing and it’s becoming hard to keep track. From what I understand, it is now fine to add a complete stranger if they send out the request. If it is alright to add someone that you barely know, or don’t know at all, is it okay to add a teacher to your friends list? I’m a little hazy on the subject.

From what I have read on this Facebook conversation and as well on this Common Sense Media page, the general consensus is that accepting a friend request from a FORMER student is not crossing any unacceptable boundaries, and I happen to agree. If you are no longer an authority figure and the request is made by the former student, I don’t see a problem with it. However, if they are still your student, there should be no “friending”.

Even if the educator has the proper privacy settings, or they are careful with the content they put on their personal Facebook page, everyone slips up sometimes. On the other hand, if there is a project in which Facebook is needed and the teacher needs to be added as a friend, there should be a professional profile in which there is no personal material available to the students.

I say, use another media tool. There are plenty out there, all you have to do is look.

If you have any suggestions for a Facebook replacement in the classroom, please let us know!

Thanks for reading 🙂
